Uta Tanabe
Uta Tanabe is a musician, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and engineer whose work is rooted in jazz piano while drawing from soul, funk, hip-hop, electronic music, and a wide range of other influences. Born in 2004, he began studying classical piano at the age of two and later taught himself bass, guitar, synthesizers, and numerous other instruments.
Grounded in the harmonic languages of classical music and jazz, Tanabe’s work combines rich harmony, intricate vocal arrangements, sampling, sound design, and propulsive grooves to create a multidimensional sound that moves freely across genre boundaries.
In his own artist projects, Tanabe handles nearly every stage of the creative process, from songwriting, composition, arrangement, and performance to recording, production, and mixing. His work moves between the physical spontaneity of a performer, the structural precision of a composer, and the detailed sonic architecture of a producer and engineer, often exploring the boundaries between performance and recording, spontaneity and construction.
His production practice also incorporates samplers, synthesizers, hardware MIDI sequencers, and legacy Macintosh computers from the 1980s and 1990s alongside contemporary DAW-based systems. Tanabe programs sounds, builds sampling workflows, and designs MIDI systems himself, treating these instruments not simply as nostalgic or “vintage” devices, but as creative tools whose limitations, interfaces, sonic characteristics, and inherent unpredictability can become part of the compositional process.
In live performance, Tanabe does not aim simply to reproduce his recorded material. Instead, every song is rearranged specifically for the stage. Song structures, sounds, and instrumental parts are reconfigured, bringing together sampling, sequencing, real-time performance, and improvisation to reconstruct—and further develop—the recorded work in the moment.
He approaches each concert not merely as a presentation of songs, but as a singular work that can only exist on that particular day, in that particular place. Extended piano improvisations, real-time musical developments, MIDI- and sequencer-driven stage elements, and visual components such as lyric displays synchronized with the music are incorporated into each performance. By moving between the spontaneity of a performer and the deliberate construction of a producer, Tanabe seeks to create a live experience distinct from the recordings themselves—one that exists only in the moment.
In 2020, while still in high school, Tanabe released his first CD. He subsequently expanded his activities through radio appearances, releases carried by Tower Records, and a performance at Shibuya Stream Hall as part of the 23rd Aoni Festival. In 2023, he was selected as a finalist for the international music program OneBeat 13 & 14.
In 2024, Tanabe moved to the United States with scholarship support and entered the Music Production & Engineering program at Berklee College of Music. During the Fall 2024 semester, he was named to the Dean’s List for academic excellence. At Berklee, he studied with pianist and composer Vadim Neselovskyi, trumpeter and composer Darren Barrett, as well as Carl Beatty and Yuki Kanesaka, while working across performance, composition, recording, and production. He also participated in performance and recording projects involving these artists. Alongside his music studies, Tanabe studied computer science, applying that technical background to the development of software and audio tools.
His commercial work includes music production for screen projects such as the final season of Dr. STONE: SCIENCE FUTURE and THE GHOST IN THE SHELL, as well as music for commercials and advertising. His creative practice extends beyond music into artwork, video, 3D visuals, and the development of original audio tools and plug-ins, allowing him to work across music, sound, visual media, and software.
In 2025, Tanabe released the ten-track album Uta, overseeing its composition, performance, recording, mixing, and visual design. That same year, he was nominated for Best Emerging Artist at the Asian Music Industry Festival 2025.
In 2026, following an invitation from Seigen Ono, Tanabe joined Saidera Ai Design / SDLab. He currently serves as Chief Researcher, working alongside his artistic practice on audio technology research and development, codec-related projects, and the development of software and audio tools.
